What does OSHA require for construction site toilets?
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c) requires toilets at every construction job site based on crew size. Table D-1 sets 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers, 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers for 20 or more, and 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers for 200 or more.
| Number of employees | Minimum facilities (OSHA Table D-1) |
|---|---|
| 20 or fewer | 1 |
| 20 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers |
| 200 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers |
Read the official text at osha.gov: 1926.51 Sanitation. Mobile crews with transportation readily available to nearby toilets are exempt under 1926.51(c)(4).
Is the OSHA minimum enough for my crew?
The OSHA minimum is a floor, not a comfort level. One toilet for 20 workers fills quickly with weekly service. Sean Rental Works recommends 1 standard unit per 10 workers on a 40-hour week, so a 20-person crew gets 2 units, which keeps lines short and service stretches workable.
| Crew | OSHA minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | 1 | 1 |
| 18 | 1 | 2 |
| 35 | 1 seat + 1 urinal | 4 |
| 60 | 2 seats + 2 urinals | 6 |

Does OSHA require hand washing on job sites?
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(f) requires construction employers to provide adequate washing facilities for employees, and they must be near the work and kept sanitary. A double-sided hand washing station or a unit with a built-in sink near the toilets meets the practical need on most Murfreesboro job sites.
Farms follow a different rule: OSHA 1928.110 requires 1 toilet and 1 hand washing facility per 20 field workers within a quarter-mile walk. See hand washing station rental.
Who decides if my site is compliant?
OSHA inspectors and your own safety program decide whether a site complies, not the rental company. Sean Rental Works supplies units in the quantity you order and services them weekly. For legal questions about a specific site, check the official OSHA text or ask your safety officer.

Questions renters ask
My boss doesn't think we need one. Do we?
OSHA 1926.51(c) requires toilet facilities at construction sites, with an exception only for mobile crews that have transportation readily available to nearby toilets. A fixed job site with a crew needs at least one.
We have 5 workers. Is one porta potty enough?
One standard porta potty with weekly service covers a 5-worker crew and meets the OSHA minimum for 20 or fewer workers.
Do urinals count toward the OSHA number?
OSHA Table D-1 counts toilet seats and urinals together for crews of 20 or more. Standard Sean Rental Works units include both a seat and a urinal.
