How do I adjust the count for alcohol, food and accessibility?
Start with the chart number. If alcohol is served, add 1 unit for every 4 units. Then add 1 wheelchair-accessible unit to each group of toilets. Then add 1 hand washing station for every 4 units, placing one near any food line. Each step uses whole units.
- Start with the chartExample: 200 guests, 5 hours → 200 ÷ 35 = 6 units (5.7 rounded up).
- Alcohol6 units ÷ 4 = 2 more (1.5 rounded up) → 8 units.
- AccessibilityAdd 1 wheelchair-accessible unit → 9 units. The 2010 ADA Standards §213.2 call for at least 5% of a cluster, minimum one.
- Hand washing9 units ÷ 4 = 3 hand washing stations (2.25 rounded up).

How many porta potties does a construction crew need?
OSHA Table D-1 sets the legal minimum: 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers, 1 seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers above 20, and 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers above 200. Sean Rental Works recommends 1 standard unit per 10 workers on a 40-hour week with weekly service.
The full rule, mobile crew exceptions and hand washing are in the OSHA job site toilet guide. Source: OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51.
Do I need a porta potty if guests can use the house?
A party of 40 or more guests with one or two house bathrooms usually needs one porta potty. Guests line up at a single bathroom, a septic system can struggle with heavy one-day use, and a unit by the driveway keeps people from walking through the house all day.
For backyard parties see event porta potty rental. For dressed-up guests, one deluxe flushing unit often replaces two standard units.
Questions renters ask
How many people does one porta potty accommodate?
One standard porta potty handles about 50 guests over a 4-hour event, or about 200 uses between services. On a job site, one unit serves about 10 workers for a 40-hour week with weekly service.
How many would you get for 2,000 people?
A 2,000-person, 4-hour event needs 40 standard units by the chart, plus 10 for alcohol if served, plus 3 wheelchair-accessible units (5% of the cluster) and 14 hand washing stations. Large events also need a service plan, so call to plan it.
We have 60 people and two bathrooms in the house. Do we need a porta potty?
Sixty guests for an afternoon will overload two house bathrooms with lines. One standard porta potty by the driveway is the usual fix.
How many restroom trailers for about 460 shelter residents?
Long-term shelters need far more capacity than a one-day event, plus daily service. Several multi-stall trailers or a mix of trailers and standard units with daily service is typical. Call so dispatch can plan the count with you.
